Esta tarde cuando llamé para hacer un pedido de comida de un restaurante en el que nunca había estado antes, dije: "Hola, me gustaría hacer un pedido para llevar", a lo que la otra persona en el línea respondió: "Hola".

Luego me repetí y obtuve un simple "Hola" nuevamente, así que me di cuenta de que ella solo hablaba español. Rápidamente me encontré en mi, hasta ahora, meramente imaginada, aterradora situación en español donde REALMENTE TENÍA QUE hablar español con un hablante nativo de español que no sabía inglés. Tanteándome pedí sopa, "Sopa" dije.

Específicamente, quería sopa de lentejas, pero, por supuesto, no conocía la palabra en español para "lentejas". Supuse (incorrectamente) que sería una palabra pronunciada como "Len-til", a lo que mi oyente, comprensiblemente, estaba totalmente confundido.

Dije: "Un momento, por favor" mientras abría rápidamente mi confiable traductor de Google y escribía L-e-n-t-i-l a lo que la computadora regresaba, "Lentaje". Con júbilo dije: "Sopa de lentaje, por favor". Ella dijo: "No, solo tenemos mariscos".

Con una risa entre nosotros, dije, "Gracias", a lo que ella respondió, "Adios". Sentí que realmente me conecté con una persona real de habla hispana, aunque solo murmuré un par de palabras como "Sopa de lenteja" y "Gracias", aún así, me sentí fortalecido para tratar de hablar con más y más personas si tuviera la oportunidad.

This afternoon as I phoned to place an order for food from a restaurant that I'd never been to before, I said, "Hello, I'd like to place an order for pick-up", to which the other person on the line replied, "Hola".

Then I repeated myself and got a simple "Hola" again, so I realized that she only spoke Spanish. I quickly found myself in my, till now, merely imagined, frightening Spanish situation where I ACTUALLY HAD TO speak Spanish with a native Spanish speaker knowing no English. Fumbling over myself I asked to have soup, "Sopa" I said.

Specifically I wanted Lentil Soup, but, of course, I didn't know the Spanish word for "Lentil". I guessed (incorrectly) that it would be a word pronounced as "Len-teel", to which my listener was, understandably, totally confused.

I said, "Un momento, por favor" ("One moment, please") as I hurriedly opened my trustworthy Google Translator and typed in L-e-n-t-i-l to which the computer returned, "Lentaje". I jubilantly said, "Sopa de lentaje, por favor" ("Lentil soup, please"). She said, "No, we only have seafood."

With a chuckle between us, I said, "Gracias" ("Thanks"), to which she replied, "Adios" ("Bye"). I felt like I actually connected with a real Spanish speaking individual, even though I only muttered a couple of words like "Sopa de lenteja" and "Gracias", still, I felt invigorated to try to speak with more and more people if given the chance.
